New Vioxx Search Engine Launched

Minneapolis, Minnesota - (OPENPRESS) February 23, 2005 -- Nielsen Technical Services today announced the formal launch of their new Vioxx Search Engine (http://www.vioxx-search-engine.com). The site was created to provide a specific resource for those conducting research into the drug Vioxx produced by Merck, Inc. It only offers a few things, but the company feels that what they offer is currently unmatched on the web.

Also known as rofecoxib, and Ceoxx outside the US, this medication for pain was found to be unsafe and cause health problems including heart attack, strokes, and death. The company is indexing selected sites for use by those looking for more information such as patients, researchers, families, doctors, pharmacists, students, and those in the legal profession. Unlike many of the commercial sites that are available today, the new site offers some distinct differences from other search engines and directories:

- The search engine spiders and indexes editor-selected, Vioxx legal and medical web sites.

- The site does not have paid listings in the search results

- The staff also provides referrals to those that seek experienced Vioxx legal assistance

Company owner, Christian Nielsen, explained the that the new search engine was an "open" system, "Anyone may suggest a site to be added to the index, but we don't expect that all sites will pass review and be included, and it is not possible to pay for inclusion. All sites are reviewed before the spider dines on them, and adds them to the index. Those that have built free sites or sites with no real content that are just trying to get people to click on advertising will not be included. We are looking to provide a unique and useful resource here. The Vioxx Search Engine is among the few smaller sites that actually build their own index and none of the content was paid for."

"Our placement of advertising on this first search engine is intentionally limited', Nielsen went on. "We have many more projects under development and wanted to make sure we got this first site correct, with any thought of financial return being second."

This site is owned, operated, and maintained by Nielsen Technical Services based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is offered as a public service for those looking for information related to the pharmaceutical pain killer Vioxx that has been shown to cause health-related problems such as heart attacks and strokes. The site is supported by paid advertising that is clearly marked and is not included in any of the search results.

Pfizer wants Bextra back on market

WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- Pfizer Inc.'s chief executive said the drugmaker hopes to work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to get the painkiller Bextra back on the market.

The pharmaceutical giant halted sales of Bextra, a COX-2 inhibitor, last month over concerns about its potential side effects. Another COX-2, Vioxx, was removed from the market last fall by Merck because of an increased risk of heart attack.

Bextra was prescribed for treatment of arthritis, rheumatism and menstrual pain.

Pfizer CEO Hank McKinnell told the Boston Globe the FDA saw unpredictable skin reactions from the drug but said federal regulators had not seen "increased cardiovascular risk."

The FDA placed a black box warning for a risk of cardiovascular events on Pfizer's other COX-2 Celebrex in April and recommended pulling Bextra. FDA had seven reports of people dying from severe skin reactions after taking Bextra.

If reintroduced for a limited purpose, patients taking Bextra likely would have to sign consent forms.
