Letter Clarifies Avandia Heart Attack Warning

Prescriber's Letter Clarifies Avandia Heart Attack Warning with Stepwise Diabetes Treatment Algorithm for Prescribers

Prescriber's Letter, an evidence-based resource for medical professionals, provides clear recommendations on treatment of type 2 diabetes and analysis of recent warnings of increased heart attack risks associated with Avandia.

Stockton, CA (PRWEB) May 31, 2007 -- Prescribers and diabetes patients alike are wondering what to make of recent media reports of a New England Journal of Medicine study suggesting Avandia (rosiglitazone) increases heart attack risk by 43% in diabetes patients. Avandia, an oral agent for type 2 diabetes, accounted for more than 3 billion dollars in worldwide sales last year. Critics are jumping to liken these N Engl J Med study results to the early cardiovascular concerns seen with Vioxx that ultimately led to its removal from the market.

But analysts at Prescriber's Letter say that crunching the study's numbers reveals only part of the story. Since this report is a meta-analysis, it is merely a study of prior study results. In order to draw conclusions that can be applied by health professionals and patients, one has to consider this study along with earlier data and knowledge of a particular patient.

Prescriber's Letter helps prescribers and patients put this new study into perspective. Experts are concluding that, as with many other diabetes medications, Avandia's only definite benefit is lowering blood glucose to help control diabetes. This new study reinforces that Avandia does not provide any long-term cardiovascular benefit in diabetes patients. In fact, it's well known that both available drugs in the "glitazone" class, Avandia and Actos (pioglitazone), cause fluid retention and should be avoided in patients with moderate to severe heart failure.

Prescriber's Letter also addresses another question raised by this study. People want to know if the heart attack risk is a "class-effect" that will be observed with Actos. This study does not answer this question since it did not look at Actos. Another highly debated study suggests that Actos (pioglitazone) may actually reduce heart attacks and strokes. But the jury is still very much out on whether all the drugs in this glitazone class lead to cardiovascular problems.

Even more important for prescribers and patients, though, is how to make treatment decisions based on the results of the new Avandia study.

Prescriber's Letter experts say to follow the recommendations in its Stepwise Order of Treatments For Type 2 Diabetes. After diet and exercise, most patients should be started on metformin. If a glitazone drug is to be started, preference should be given to Actos over Avandia. But if a patient is already stable and doing well on Avandia the patient should not be switched to Actos at this time, based only on the results of this study.

Prescriber's Letter, an evidence-based subscription resource for prescribers, provides the facts about the quality and results of studies like this one, without any spin or sensationalism. A concise analysis of this study is available at www.prescribersletter.com/newsroom/avandia. In the article, the editors tell prescribers what they need to know to translate this study into practice. The editors also attach their Detail-Document that explores the facts that shaped the Letter's recommendations. This added resource also provides the Stepwise Order of Treatment guidelines and a handout to help doctors counsel patients on the risks of Avandia and Actos. Thousands of articles and Detail-Documents like this one are available at www.prescribersletter.com.

The editorial team at Prescriber's Letter has been publishing drug information recommendations since 1985 and carefully researches the most important topics and compiles the evidence into monthly Letters consisting of concise articles each linked to an in-depth Detail-Document. In order to remain completely unbiased, Prescriber's Letter does not accept any advertising and has no ties with any drug manufacturing company.

Patients Turn to Health Frequency with Positive Results

Thousands of Patients Turn to Health Frequency with Positive Results

Victor Dyment, Healer/Scientist, is not what usually first comes to mind when one thinks of a health and wellness expert. He is muscular and academic in appearance, Russian born, and can pass on first glance as an athletic weight lifter or college professor. Appearances--like health--can be deceiving. Dyment is, in fact, the co-author of "A Journey Towards Health" and the founder and leading practitioner of a new branch of alternative medicine, known as Health Frequency. His approach to healing, in combination with the body's natural processes, brings relief to many patients where traditional treatment has failed--and is often a lifesaver.

(PRWEB) May 28, 2007 -- Victor Dyment, Healer/Scientist, is not what usually first comes to mind when one thinks of a health and wellness expert.

"Health Frequency refers to a level of frequency in the stem cells produced by bone marrow," said Dyment. "There is only one frequency that is healthy, and it is affected by everyday materials including fabrics and incompatible dental materials previously used in dental work." When people wear or use them, the body reacts biochemically, causing numerous problems including an overall deterioration in health and wellness, sleep disorders, and even serious illness such as cancer and autoimmune diseases.

"Teeth are the most important access to health," adds Dyment. "Dental materials render the greatest influence on the state of health of the immune system, cardiovascular condition and high-grade work of cells in the body. A large percentage of discomfort and serious health problems are due to inappropriate dental materials. Mercury amalgams, composites, bonding cements, many metals, porcelains or other materials not compatible to Health Frequency negatively affect cellular structures and all functions in the body."

"Traditional medical and scientific research focuses on chemical solutions for treatment," he said. "I focus on the body's frequency," Dyment emphasizes.

Dyment has treated approximately one thousand patients ranging in symptoms from chronic migraines and severe back pain to autoimmune and kidney disorders. It is not uncommon for his patients to first be misdiagnosed by traditional physicians for years before learning of Health Frequency.

One such patient, Jane Parker who later became co-author with Dyment of the book "A Journey Towards Health" approached him about her scleroderma, an autoimmune disease characterized by the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the skin and organs of the body. This condition leads to thickness and firmness of involved areas, and considerable pain. It is also characterized by short life expectancy.

"I was diagnosed with pain and numbness in my hands and arms," said Parker. "Doctors told me I had arthritis, then carpal tunnel syndrome, then Lupus, and finally, scleroderma. I simply did not accept the death sentence."

Dyment uses simple touch by placing his hand over the problem area to allow his frequency to enter the muscle, bones, and ultimately bone marrow of a patient. In effect, his healthy health frequency heals that of his patients.

"By the end of my first treatment, I felt a significant reduction in pain," explained Parker. "I felt better."

Under Dyment's care, Parker replaced clothes and improved her personal environment. Gone were bed sheets, couches, and mattresses that negatively affected frequency. Substituted in their place were linens and furniture made with the right material.

According to Dr.Mark D. Horowitz M.D., P.C, Parker was able to taper off Prednisone within six months and the scleroderma was completely reversed within three years.

In an effort to treat more patients, Dyment has been working to produce two products that reduce frequency pollution in the body. The first, a gold alloy in the form of a ring, causes healthy biochemical reactions in the body. The second, a dental alloy, is designed to replace mercury fillings and other incompatible materials previously used in dental work, a leading cause of frequency problems.

Safe and Effective Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis

The Cheap, Safe and Effective Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis That the Drug Companies are Trying to Keep Secret

In a recent interview, a victim of Multiple Sclerosis revealed how she has been symptom-free for the past 10 years. The success she has experienced has compelled her to bring her research to the medical community in hopes of helping other MS sufferers. The National MS Society (backed by the pharmaceutical industry which funds it) has actively suppressed her.

Mount Jackson, VA (PRWEB) May 25, 2007 -- In a recent interview, a victim of Multiple Sclerosis revealed how she has been symptom-free for the past 10 years. The success she has experienced has compelled her to bring her research to the medical community in hopes of helping other MS sufferers. The National MS Society (backed by the pharmaceutical industry which funds it) has actively suppressed her.

MS has been extensively researched, yet it is still unknown exactly what causes it. The medical community has been focusing on the idea that it is an autoimmune disease since 1935. The common theory is that the immune system is attacking Myelin, the insulation on the nerves; however, there is no proof of this.

"I started studying histamine 2 and then started looking into how H2 is involved in heat. That was the first symptom I applied it to and then I started applying it to the other symptoms of MS. It answered all the symptoms of MS that we have not been able to answer, so from that I developed the treatment," says Elaine DeLack, RN.

DeLack found that Histamine 2 is a neuro transmitter that sends messages from nerve to nerve. It balances the immune system, makes digestive enzymes, regulates stress and stimulates the thyroid, to name a few essential tasks.

MS patients have difficulty taking the histamine in the brain and turning it into the H2 transmitter. This is why the MS sufferer's total body gets involved in the disease.

DeLack's own motivation was to try and find something to help alleviate her own debilitating MS symptoms. Through extensive research, DeLack developed and patented a treatment called Prokarin. She and numerous MS sufferers have found improvement in walking, dexterity, fatigue, cognition and bladder function to name a few common symptoms.

But simply helping herself and a few individuals was not her goal anymore. Once DeLack had helped herself, she wanted to help everyone suffering from MS. She knew that in order to help the most people, she would have to convince doctors that her treatment worked. This meant she would need to get a formal, double-blind study underway, and have it published in a scholarly, peer-reviewed medical journal. Yet she didn't count on the opposition that she would encounter from the very people who claimed to want to help MS sufferers the most.

Her studies were well-documented -- conducted through an impartial outside university. They showed conclusively the effectiveness of the very treatment which has kept her own body symptom-free for over a decade. The peer review process confirmed that her study was sound research and worthy of publication.

On the morning after its print in the MS Research Journal, the National MS Society sent out a release claiming that their own clinical review had determined that the study was poorly designed and hard to interpret. According to DeLack, the Society had not even gotten a copy of the report by the evening before their release. They never read it. They certainly never conducted a clinical review of it. They simply wanted it silenced, because they knew it threatened their interests.

While DeLack remains symptom free, her new goal is to someday cure MS for good. The biggest roadblock to success is the fact that current MS treatments, while less than effective, are huge cash cows for the drug providers who provide doctors with training and support organizations such as the National MS Society. DeLack continues her attempts to convince the medical community of the Prokarin treatment option.

You can hear her complete interview on Inside Success Radio, which earns its reputation for quality interviews with the best-known experts of many fields.

Zelnorm Recall Site Launched

Zelnorm-Recall.com Launched by Hissey Kientz, LLP

Zelnorm-Recall.com contains medical and legal information about the irritable bowel syndrome drug Zelnorm and the latest news concerning the potential Zelnorm recall.

(PRWEB) May 24, 2007 -- The law firm of Hissey Kientz, LLP has announced the launch of its new website, Zelnorm-Recall.com. This new site will provide patients with information about the potential health risks of Zelnorm, as well as medical and legal information concerning the recent recall of Zelnorm in the United States.

Zelnorm was designed to treat the symptoms of constipation associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Initially, the drug was rejected by the Food and Drug Administration due to a link between Zelnorm and abdominal problems, and its limited effectiveness at treating IBS. Zelnorm was eventually approved in July 2002, despite studies indicating an increased risk of ovarian cysts among Zelnorm patients.

After a routine safety review of Zelnorm in February 2007, the FDA was informed of clinical trial data concerning the drug which indicated that Zelnorm users were at an increased risk of cardiovascular side effects compared to patients treated with a placebo. Because of this risk, Zelnorm patients were about eight times more likely to suffer heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular side effects.

Based on this information, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Zelnorm, withdrew the drug in the United States at the FDA's request. As a result, Zelnorm will no longer be sold or marketed in the United States. The FDA says that Novartis is planning to issue a full Zelnorm recall, although no date has been announced.

In addition to providing information about the withdrawal, Zelnorm-Recall.com contains information about the Zelnorm side effects associated with the drug and legal advice for patients who were injured by taking are considering filing a Zelnorm lawsuit. The website will also be regularly updated to keep patients informed about the latest news concerning the anticipated Zelnorm recall and potential claims or lawsuits.

New Pain Treatment and Medical Device Created

Innovative Pain Treatment and Medical Device Created by the Brooks Center

Based on recent research, the Brooks Center and its founder Ron Brooks have developed a new pain treatment and medical device. The center's neurovascular restructuring treatment and Neurovasc device technology were created to address, control and cure symptoms of physical pain and stress.

Westlake, CA (PRWEB) May 24, 2007 -- Ron Brooks, founder of the Brooks Center (www.brooksptcenter.com) in Thousand Oaks, California, has developed an innovative pain treatment and medical device as the result of a recent research program. The company is currently considering different private equity funding options to commence manufacturing and marketing of its neurovascular restructuring treatment and Neurovasc device technology.

During his 30 years of practice, Brooks became frustrated with the inability to control and cure the symptoms of pain, which hinders the rehabilitation process. He began to see a correlation between a specific pain pattern and the superficial structures of the body. Research in this area spawned the Brooks Center's neurovascular restructuring pain treatment.

A direct result of this research program was the development of the neurovasc, a unique vacuum device that restructures the superficial components of the body. The neurovasc eradicates pain by lifting and separating the layers of injured tissue, releasing entrapped nerves that cause pain. According to Brooks, the treatment also influences patients' brain chemistry and allows them to regain control over their lives when acute and chronic pain is relieved. With lower pain levels, patients report reduced stress, depression and anxiety levels; this also facilitates reducing patients' dependency on caffeine, alcohol and/or medication.

"Pain and stress compounded with substance abuse will eventually kill you," Brooks says. "The very tragic event involving Anna Nicole Smith focused public attention on this issue. The emotional factors that contributed to her death were obviously compounded by the abuse of some powerful medications. Perhaps this explains some of the bizarre behavior we saw before her subsequent overdose and death. This sequence of events is being played out in our country on a daily basis. We need to recognize that behaviors like this are a reflection and manifestation of a chemical imbalance in the brain."

Without finding ways to control pain and stress, the result is often a downward spiral from the accumulated effects, Brooks says. This often leads to increased dependency on caffeine, over-the-counter medications, drugs and alcohol to cope with pain and stress.

The Brooks Center is focused on the treatment of adults with physical pain and stress, and has recently expanded to become active in the field of adult and youth sports injuries. The Brooks Center is looking for partners to help build a network of offices to bring its neurovascular treatment to the public across North America.

Diabetes May Not Need to be Managed with Avandia

Type 2 Diabetes May Not Need to be Managed with Avandia Or Other Drugs -- Treat The Disease Naturally & Safely

Skip the Drugs:

Treat Type 2 Diabetes Naturally & Safely by Curbing Sugar and Exercising, Cardiologist & Health Counselor Recommend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 22 2007 - NEW YORK-The shocking news this week in the New England Journal of Medicine that the diabetes medication Avandia may raise the risk of heart attacks by 43 % and cardiovascular death by 64 % draws attention to the fact that in many instances, preventing and naturally treating type 2 diabetes by reducing sugar and exercising are much safer than pharmaceuticals.

"Why isn't the medical community paying more attention to the fact that type 2 diabetes can be easily and effectively treated naturally, without any drugs?" wonders cardiologist Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D. and certified holistic health counselor Connie Bennett, C.H.H.C., authors of SUGAR SHOCK! How Sweets And Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life-And How You Can Get Back on Track.

"Doctors and health experts need to focus on the dangers of high sugar intake and the corresponding alarming incidence of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance," Bennett and Dr. Sinatra insist.

"Taking natural measures is a much easier and safer way to prevent type 2 diabetes," maintains Dr. Sinatra, an internationally recognized cardiologist and anti-aging expert with a practice in Manchester, Connecticut.

"And, if people get type 2 diabetes, whenever I can, I'll treat these patients with high blood sugar in natural ways such as restricting intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates, increasing fiber, exercising, losing weight, and targeted nutraceuticals such as cinnamon, alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, vanadium and gymnema sylvestre."

Both Dr. Sinatra and Bennett are alarmed that more doctors, patients and other consumers don't know that eating too much sugar can trigger many serious health conditions, including heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, and polycystic ovary syndrome. "Sugar is not your friend; it's your foe," says Dr. Sinatra, who downplays cholesterol's role in heart disease.

SUGAR SHOCK! (Berkley Books, 2007) is an expose about the dangers of sugars and refined carbs. For the book, Bennett, an experienced journalist, interviewed more than 200 health experts and sugar addicts from around the world, including researchers from Harvard and Princeton. The inspiration for SUGAR SHOCK! grew out of Bennett's own struggles with sugar addiction and her amazing improvement in health after kicking sweets and "culprit carbs." Dr. Sinatra was eager to join forces with Bennett, because for some 30 years, he's been warning his patients about sugar's dangers.

SUGAR SHOCK! includes a foreword by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, and it is endorsed by a Who's Who of health experts, including Dr. Mehmet Oz (YOU: On A Diet) and Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. To get a sneak peek at the book SUGAR SHOCK!, visit www.SugarShock.com, where you also can sign up for the weekly Stop SUGAR SHOCK! Minute e-zine.

New Study Reveals Trends in Pharmaceutical Clinical Trial Outsourcing to Emerging Markets

Arrowhead Publishers' New Study Reveals Trends in Pharmaceutical Clinical Trial Outsourcing to Emerging Markets

Offshoring clinical trials to emerging markets around the world is receiving increasing attention as a very attractive alternative. This follows as a natural reaction to already successful offshoring activities in the IT industry.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) May 10, 2007 -- Offshoring clinical trials to emerging markets around the world is receiving increasing attention as a very attractive alternative. This follows as a natural reaction to already successful offshoring activities in the IT industry. The big question is: Do clinical research capabilities comparable to the US in terms of sophistication and FDA-compliance exist anywhere else in the world? And if they do, are they ready to handle the huge surge in business likely headed their way?

Outsourcing Clinical Trials: A Global Analytical Guide and Comparative Analysis of International Destinations, with Location Attractiveness Index analyzes the key drivers that have made the search for effective clinical trial outsourcing a necessity rather than an option in today's drug development efforts. The current climate of clinical trials in emerging markets across the world is examined. Geographic areas covered include Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand, Africa, Asia and India.

The report also includes the Clinical Trial Outsourcing Global Attractiveness Index. This vital piece of original research includes tables and graphs which rank international locations, according to the following criteria:
•Study Cost Indicators
•Patient Indicators
•Disease Indicators
•Clinical Research Indicators
•Research Personnel Indicators
•Study Site Indicators
•Business Environment Indicators

The index serves as an invaluable starting resource for pharmaceutical companies seeking to outsource their clinical trial functions to international destinations.

Report Highlights

Why Outsource Clinical Trials?
More and more pharma executives are considering outsourcing clinical development as an effective means to make the process cheaper and more efficient. Another attraction of outsourcing clinical development is that it can be implemented relatively quickly. This trend towards outsourcing clinical drug development has already started. Industry analyses of budgetary outlay on clinical outsourcing further support this statement.

Outsourced pharmaceutical R&D spending will grow almost 15% annually for the next five years. The increase forecasted for outsourced spending in the coming years is about double the anticipated increase in general R&D spending. Pharmaceutical companies are finding that by using outsourcing strategically and by effectively integrating external resources with internal capabilities, they can reap dividends by getting better products to market faster.

Reasons why outsourcing is growing as an attractive option:
•Overcoming deficiencies in internal capabilities;
•Reducing financial risk by limiting capital investments such as lab equipment and real estate;
•Allowing biotech companies to hold off from partnering with a major pharmaceutical company, thereby enabling them to keep a larger ownership interest in a new drug;
•Saving significant time and money in the approval process with improvements in quality and speed;
•Enabling companies to pursue approval in a number of countries at the same time by utilizing an international CRO.
•Promotes greater specialization.

Some reasons for a decreasing pool of U.S. based investigators:
•High turnover rate- many investigators are not interested in conducting more trials after the first or second round
•Lack of financial incentives- there has been flat growth in study grant amounts
•Growing protocol complexity
•Onerous burden of compliance
•Slow payment process

Reasons for increasing reliance on non-U.S. investigators:
•Training is comparable to western counterparts and there has been a tremendous surge in efforts to improve cGMP education and compliance training
•Compensation costs are significantly less
•Socially and culturally more acceptable to populations in emerging markets - this is important to ensure high patient compliance
•Affords access to large patient populations - this promises long term growth as there is no immediate threat of diminishing numbers of treatment-naïve subjects

Contract Research Organizations and Outsourcing
During the past few years, contract research organizations, or CROs, have received the lion's share of outsourced clinical research revenue. In 2001, in the United States, CROs received an estimated 60% of the clinical research outsourced from pharmaceutical companies. The CRO market grew from $1 billion in 1992 to more than $8 billion in 2002. CROs enrolled 7 million research subjects in 1992 and 20 million in 2001.

The multi-national availability of CRO services is increasing in the wake of two concurrent trends - the globalization of outsourcing services in general, following the lead of the financial and Information Technology (IT) sectors, and the internationalization of the pharmaceutical sector in the quest for global market reach, which has been facilitated by the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) and expansion of international trade, travel, and communication.

Trends and Outlook
Recent restrictions, due to heightened security procedures, will increase the need to have a physical presence overseas due to barriers to the importing of foreign talent into the US and the increasing cost, time, and difficulty of moving people and supplies about internationally. Only about one-fifth of respondents provided services internationally in 1998. Over the succeeding years, however, the number of US-based CROs reporting that they had opened up offices overseas rose from one-quarter to one-third.

The location of these offices (11 in 2000 and 20 in 2002), as shown in Graph 2.7, appear to encompass regions considered both "traditional" (e.g., Europe and North America) as well as "non-traditional" (e.g., Asia and Africa) loci for clinical trials. The most significant change from 2000 to 2002 appears to be the increase in offices being opened in Australia, perhaps at the expense of new office openings in Asia. This could be a harbinger of the emergence of Australia as a hub for the provision of CRO services in the Asia-Pacific region.

Furthermore, our survey results indicate that this expansion overseas is particularly evident in the clinical area, with 44% of US-based respondents indicating that the number of clinical trials conducted overseas has increased over the last two years, while only 6% reported that it has decreased.

Preventive Measures, Detoxification, and Supplementation Keys to Better Health

Expert Physician, Author Shines Light on Preventive Measures and Promotes Regular Detoxification and Ongoing Supplementation as Keys to Better Health

Leading physician and author of best-selling medical books partners with Detoxologie.com to heighten awareness of need for ongoing cleansing program as part of an overall preventative health plan.

Englewood, CO (PRWEB) May 10, 2007 -- Hyla Cass M.D., an expert in integrative medicine who has authored several books, including Natural Highs and 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health, has partnered with Detoxologie.com to draw attention to the positive benefits of preventive health care, including internal cleansing.

"As a practicing physician, experience has taught me that prevention is the best method for health maintenance," Dr. Cass explains. "Since the digestive system is the first entryway for many toxins and pathogens (such as bacteria and parasites), regular detoxification is a requirement for optimal health. I have found Detoxologie™ to be one of the most comprehensive and effective colon cleansing programs available."

Dr. Cass, a nationally acclaimed innovator and expert in the field of integrative medicine, combines the best of leading-edge natural medicine with modern science in her clinical practice, writings, lectures and nationwide media appearances, most recently on ABC's top-rated daytime show The View.

As Dr. Cass stresses, detoxification is a normal, natural, and necessary part of daily well-being and health maintenance. Because of this, detoxification should be done on a consistent basis, and supported by ongoing efforts through diet and supplementation, using such products as Detoxologie's™ high-potency 30-Day Body-Cleansing and Renewal Program.

A member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Health Sciences Institute and Taste for Life magazine, and an Associate Editor at Total Health Magazine, Dr. Cass supports detoxification because once the body is cleansed and functioning more efficiently, it will absorb more nutrients from foods, allowing users to finally side-step destructive cravings for "bad" carbohydrates and saturated fats.

"It's a win-win situation," explains Detoxologie™ owner Steve Franzmann, who has suffered four strokes, the first at the age of 35. After years of extensive evaluation, Steve's medical condition was diagnosed as Lupus Anti-Coagulation Syndrome, a genetic blood disorder. During this time, rather than take multiple prescription medications that only seemed to make matters worse, Steve and wife Kelley teamed up with master herbalist Bob Nikkel in search of a natural alternative. The remarkable improvement in Steve's health led to the creation of the Detoxologie™ product line, which safely and quickly eliminates toxins from not only the digestive tract, but the organs and very cells themselves, providing Steve and other users alike with a more solid foundation on which to build better health.

In repairing Steve's health and helping others do the same, the Franzmann's have consulted with some of the nation's foremost experts on integrative medicine and naturopathic treatments. Their research and findings on the importance of internal cleansing and detoxification has led to ongoing improvements in Steve's personal health. This remains the driving force behind their commitment to providing education and a product line that will help others find health as well, an unwavering commitment they share with Dr. Cass.

Revolutionary Non Drug Headache Treatment

Headaches Are A Big Pain For Sufferers - Revolutionary Non Drug Headache Treatment Offers Needed Relief

The statistics surrounding the prevalence of headache sufferers in the United States are astounding. Magnetic therapy offers an effective, non-drug alternative for chronic and severe headache sufferers.

Palm Desert, CA (PRWEB) May 10th, 2007 - According to the American Headache Society, every ten seconds someone in the United States goes to the emergency room with a headache or migraine. Almost 50 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. With statistics this astounding, it is no wonder that new medications are constantly introduced claiming to prevent and cure the pain and frequency of headaches.

Despite the prevalence of new headache treatments, statistics continue to show that they are not working and a miracle drug for headaches has yet to be found.

However, a drug free alternative is improving the lives of thousands of Americans. "Last year, a friend recommended that I try magnetic therapy to help chronic headaches," comments Darlene Whyte from Corpus Christi, Texas. "I did some research and discovered Dr. Bakst who is considered by many to be the preeminent expert on magnetic therapy. I purchased the Gold Neomax Bezel and felt almost instant relief. My life has improved tremendously, I wear my Bezel everyday and it provides continuous prevention."

Dr. Bakst founded MagnaTech Labs in 1994 and since then, they have created the only patented magnetic pain relief technology. Dr. Bakst explains how magnets are an effective headache treatment: "There is no such thing as pain if it doesn't reach the brain. A pain impulse must reach the brain to be determined as pain. You can block the transmission of the pain impulse to the brain using drugs or magnetic therapy. By placing a highly powerful negative magnetic field over the nerve, the magnetically, positively charged ions will be attracted to the negative magnetic field, thus impeding the flow of the positively charged ions along the nerves to the brain. Of course, some of the positive ions will escape, thereby allowing continued sensation. However, our research reveals that the longer the magnets are in place over the affected site, the more effective the negative magnetic field will become. Thus, the longer the product is used, the more effective it becomes."

Many of Dr. Bakst's clients have suffered from chronic and severe headaches for years. Once wearing the Neomax Bezel, they find that their headache usually subsides within about 20 minutes. If they continue wearing the necklace, as Dr. Bakst explained, the product becomes even more effective. It is an amazing headache treatment offering long-term relief, without the dangers associated with prescription and over the counter drugs.

Headache sufferers interested in learning more about how magnetic therapy is a beneficial alternative headache treatment are strongly encouraged to visit the company's website at www.drbakstmagnetics.com.

Bar Coding and Pharmacy Robot Patient Safety

Pharmacy Robot and Bar Coding at the Nebraska Medical Center Ensures Patient Safety

A new automated drug management system in the newly remodeled inpatient pharmacy at the Nebraska Medical Center is drawing a lot of attention as it minimizes the potential for medication errors and improves patient safety.

Omaha, Neb. (PRWEB) May 9, 2007 -- The newest employee in the newly remodeled inpatient pharmacy at The Nebraska Medical Center is drawing a lot of attention. This worker stands 8 feet tall, spans a width of 36 feet and holds the key to ensuring greater patient safety, reducing medication errors and increasing productivity - giving pharmacists more time to spend consulting with physicians and nurses about patient care and medication safety.

It's the Swisslog PillPick system, an automated drug management unit, designed to package, store and dispense medications in bar coded, unit-dose form. It has the capability of storing 44,000 medication unit doses. The Nebraska Medical Center dispenses more than 6,000 unit doses daily.

"Less than 1% of acute care hospitals in North America have this technology," said Mike Powell, executive director of pharmacy and pathology services at The Nebraska Medical Center. "The Nebraska Medical Center is fortunate to have such state-of-the-art technology. This system will definitely help eliminate possible medication errors."

Automated packaging and dispensing systems for filling patient orders are becoming more common in U.S. hospitals as a result of increased public knowledge related to medication errors. The Institute of Medicine reports that more than 7,000 deaths result from medication errors in our country alone. While some of the medication errors result from incorrect orders and transcriptions, almost half of the medication errors occur because of dispensing errors or administration errors.

Bar coding has the potential to dramatically reduce medication errors during dispensing and administration. "Accurate dispensing is key to patient safety and automatic picking based on bar code recognition assures us of that. The robot also offers compact and efficient storage," said Powell. "Additionally, bar codes will help our hospital make sure that the doctors and nurses are administering the right drugs at the appropriate dosages," said Powell.

According to a VA-authored article published in the Journal of Healthcare Information Management (Volume 16-1, Winter 2002), the Colmery O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka, KS reported bar code implementation decreased the following error types:
•    Wrong medication by 75%
•    Wrong dose by 62%
•    Wrong patient by 93%
•    Wrong administration time by 87%
•    Missed doses by 70%

"The reduction of medication errors has an obvious patient impact and has a financial
benefit too," said Powell. "As a general rule, each adverse drug event due to medication errors can add more than $5,800 to the hospital bill of a single patient." Powell said the cost stems from factors including increased hospital stays, drugs used to counteract incorrect dosages, and extra nursing and physician costs.

A critical component to bar code implementation happens at a patient's bedside. In a typical administration cycle utilizing bedside verification, a nurse will scan the bar code on the unit dose and scan the patient's wristband in order to ensure that the "five rights" are met: right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time. The nurse also will scan the bar code on her hospital identification badge to record who administered the drug.

Dawn Straub, RN, MSN, CNAA, BC, director of nursing resources and development at The Nebraska Medical Center says it is vitally important that pharmacy and nursing work closely together. "Nurses are at the sharp end of patient care delivery - that point where all preceding work and actions of others culminate into actual intervention to the patient. Bar coding will help provide patient safety at this point of interaction, and give the nurse a safety net."
Another safety feature of the PillPick system is full automation. After a Pillbox is filled and verified by the pharmacist, the doses dispensed are not touched by human hands until they are given to the patient. A PillBox contains up to a three-month supply of commonly dispensed pharmaceutical drugs.

"Simply put, the more human intervention, the greater the probability for error. This automated system minimizes handling by pharmacy staff, reducing the potential for human error," said Powell. The 'robot' has been operational at The Nebraska Medical Center for a month now. "Already, the pharmacy staff is seeing amazing results," said Chris Shaffer, director of pharmaceutical and nutrition care at The Nebraska Medical Center. "One big difference is the phones aren't constantly ringing in the pharmacy anymore because nurses aren't calling about missing medication doses. We estimate the PillPick system will eliminate about 17,000 phone calls a year."

Shaffer adds the system also eliminates the tedious and time-consuming task of handling and packaging unit dose medications. This frees up pharmacists to spend more time consulting with physicians and nurses about patient care. "Research shows that when pharmacists round with physicians, medication errors are reduced by up to two-thirds," said Shaffer.

Pharmacy Quick Facts
•    The hospital inpatient pharmacy fills around 2,000 new medication orders each day.
•    The hospital inpatient pharmacy dispensed more than 2.2 million unit doses of medications last year.

With a reputation for excellence, innovation and extraordinary patient care, The Nebraska Medical Center has earned the J.D. Power & Associates highest healthcare honor - Hospital of Distinction. It has also been recognized with the 2006 Consumer Choice Award, a mark of patient satisfaction as selected by healthcare consumers. As the teaching hospital for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, this 689 licensed bed facility has an international reputation for providing solid organ and bone marrow transplantation services and is well known nationally and regionally for its oncology, neurology and cardiology programs. Pharmaceutical Company to Pay Government $9.8 Million

Pharmaceutical Company Agrees to Pay Government $9.8 Million to Settle Whistleblower Claims

Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. will pay $9.8 million to settle allegations that it promoted the use of a topical skin preparation for unapproved use.

Overland Park, Kan. (PRWEB) May 9, 2007 -- "Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. will pay $9.8 million to settle allegations that it promoted the use of a topical skin preparation for unapproved use," the United States Department of Justice said Tuesday (Case 04-2389 in federal court in Kansas).

The four whistleblowers, represented by Brous Horn LLC of Overland Park, Kan., informed the government of the pharmaceutical company's allegedly illegal marketing practices that resulted in the settlement.

The four were former Medicis sales representatives who alleged that Medicis trained them to market one of its drugs to doctors for an off-label use, not approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

The whistleblowers alleged that they were trained to market a prescription drug called Loprox to pediatricians for use on children under the age of 10 to treat diaper rash and other skin conditions. The FDA has never approved the use of Loprox on children under the age of 10.

"Although doctors can prescribe medications to patients for off-label uses," says attorney Carrie Brous, Brous Horn, Overland Park, Kan., "it is illegal for pharmaceutical companies to market their drugs to doctors for off-label uses."

Medicis allegedly misused federal and state funds by marketing Loprox off-label to doctors, causing claims to be submitted to Medicaid for Loprox dispensed for the treatment of children under 10 years of age.

"Because of the False Claims Act, the four whistleblowers will receive a portion of the $9.8 million settlement as a reward for coming forward with information," says Brous.

The Act was first enacted by Congress in 1863 during the Civil War amid widespread fraud on the Union military by suppliers who would, for example, charge the government twice for the same cavalry horse. The Act encouraged reporting of the fraud by private citizens by providing a 50 percent reward to the whistleblower. The act was scaled way back in 1943, but Congress sweetened it in 1986 as a reaction to reports of widespread fraud and Cold War defense spending under President Ronald Regan. The Act now provides for a 15 to 30 percent reward to whistleblowers.

Since 2003, Brous Horn has been serving clients in the Kansas City metropolitan area and nationwide. The Brous Horn office is located in Overland Park, Kan. Source Of Tension Headaches Targeted

Redesigned Therapeutic Aid Takes Aim At The Source Of Tension Headaches

A new design of The Relief Pyramid, the time-tested device for relief of tension headache and underlying stress, is now available online. Designed by an Osteopathic Physician with specialty training in manipulative medicine, The Relief Pyramid targets suboccipital muscle tightness, a frequent cause of common headaches. Effective, portable and inexpensive, it is a promising and powerful tool for millions worldwide who are suffering from chronic headaches.

Tucson, Arizona (PRWEB) May 5, 2007 -- A new design of The Relief Pyramid, the time-tested device for relief of tension headache and underlying stress, is now available online.

The most common type of headache is the tension headache. Studies indicate between 63%-93% of men and women over the age of 25 experience tension headache. In today's fast-paced and time-starved world, a common cause of headache is that of stress and tightness/spasm of the suboccipital muscles (found in the upper neck just below the bony skull). While analgesics and different forms of therapy may temporarily alleviate symptoms, headaches often reoccur.

With the availability of The Relief Pyramid headache reducing device, sufferers now have another option -- a drug-free, safe and effective aid that can be used anytime, in the comfort of home or office. Originally, the device was a one-piece monolithic foam product available in two sizes, short and tall. The new and improved Relief Pyramid is now a two-piece adjustable unit, incorporating a reversible top pad. This simple enhancement allows for customization of The Relief Pyramid height to accommodate different patient sizes.

While the latest iteration of the device has only recently been made available, the basic concept behind The Relief Pyramid is not new. Archaeologists have found beds used by the Ancient Egyptians that raised the head during sleep, decompressing the skull (or occiput) from the upper vertebrae of the neck (atlas of the cervical spine). There is evidence that Orientals used similar devices thousands of years ago. More recently, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of Osteopathic Medicine, fashioned his own version of this bed-like device that he called the Saints Rest.

The idea behind all of these designs involves the principle of occipital decompression. Unfortunately, devices for nighttime use involve spending extended periods of sleep in the same position. Another relatively recent adaptation of the occipital decompression idea, though impractical for many people nowadays, was Dr. Still's "rope tied between two trees." Yet, the desired objective of all these devices is the same: decrease suboccipital muscle tightness, gently stretch the dural tube and realign the occiput on the atlas to relieve tension headache.

What is new with the advent of The Relief Pyramid is a comfortable, portable and affordable design. Three gentle therapies occur during the same 10-20 minute relaxation session. The first is muscle inhibition, where a gentle inhibitory pressure is applied to tight suboccipital muscles to reduce spasm. Second is occipital decompression, where the skull is lifted out of and released from its impacted position. The third is a gentle craniosacral technique (CV-IV) that resets the body's cerebrospinal mechanism thereby reducing stress and inducing a feeling of well-being. All three techniques are specifically addressed by The Relief Pyramid design: the bowl-shaped edge, adjustable height and foam pad resiliency.

Over 15 years of design, testing and refinement have gone into the development of The Relief Pyramid. During his post-graduate Osteopathic training, inventor Richard Brown, D.O. (now retired) recognized the need for a specially designed therapeutic aid he could recommend to patients. Prior, practitioners would often advise use of a padded stack of books or a tennis ball to target tight suboccipital muscles. In an effort to make a specific product available to all, he began experimenting with designs in 1990.

Elucidation of Drug Metabolites So Easy A Caveman Could Do It

Related Fragment Screening: Swift and Easy Elucidation of Drug Metabolites

Software assigns, interprets and organizes LC/MS data, making it easier to visualize structural relationships between parent drugs and metabolites. Related fragment screening will be highlighted at an ACD/Labs MS Seminar (register) held in advance of the 55th ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry on Sunday, June 3rd, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Indianapolis, IN.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) May 4, 2007 -- Researchers in the field of drug metabolism take note of a new method for quickly and easily identifying and elucidating the structures of related compounds by LC/MS with related fragment screening and ACD/IntelliXtract.

Related fragment screening takes advantage of the fact that related compounds, such as drug metabolites or degradants, will have some chemical structure similarities to the parent drug. The mass spectra will therefore be similar, as common substructures will yield common fragment ions. Mass spectral relationships can then be used to identify potential metabolites. Furthermore, the relationship between chemical structure and mass spectrum may be used to elucidate the structure of potential metabolites by identifying the sites of modification on the parent drug. Conceptually, this seems simple; however, in practice, interpreting complex LC/MS data can be very challenging.

Software can interpret, label and organize mass spectral data, making it easier to extract common and related fragment information. Mass spectrum interpretation tools help chemists visualize the relationships between the parent drug and related compounds. ACD/IntelliXtract has the capability to extract chromatographic components, and interpret the pure-component spectrum for each, automatically assigning MH+ or MH- adducts, multimers and fragment ions. This helps mass spectrometrists quickly glean the relevant information from LC/MS data sets, easing the burden of spectrum interpretation, so that analysts spend less time on routine identification and confirmation, and can focus on solving more challenging problems.

An illustration of how to use ACD/IntelliXtract for related fragment screening in an example of forced degradation was recently presented in a talk at Pittcon 2007 entitled 'Identification of Impurities Using Liquid Chromatography Hyphenated with Tandem Mass Spectrometry'.

"IntelliXtract can now combine mass spectral identifiers such as 12C, 13C, and MH+, with knowledge of the parent structure, the differences in mass between parent and some unknown, and the inherent shifts in the fragments of these related compounds," commented Mark Bayliss, Director of Analytical Informatics, ACD/Labs. "This is an important step towards automated structure building from mass spectra. The future is certainly looking to be very exciting in this field."

More information about related fragment screening can be obtained by downloading the application note Extraction and Elucidation of Metabolites using Related Fragment Screening from the ACD/Labs website. The note illustrates the use of related fragment screening using ACD/IntelliXtract to help identify and determine the structure of metabolites of the antiarrhythmic drug verapamil.

Related fragment screening will be highlighted at an ACD/Labs MS Seminar (register) held in advance of the 55th ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry on Sunday, June 3rd, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Indianapolis, IN. View the seminar agenda.
